‘Twas the Night (After): A Christmas Tennis Wrap-Up

Unlike in past seasons, the Australian swing starts a few days into the year rather than right on the cusp of New Year’s Eve. With their newfound free time, many players had a chance to spend the holidays at home…and bombarded us with postings of their holiday frivolity. If it’s not on social media, it never happened, right?

Here’s a round-up of how some of the WTA and ATP chaps spent their festive days:

Just a few days ago, David was marveling over Jelena Jankovic‘s Instagram game and naturally, she delivered on the most glittering holiday of them all.

As she herself once said: She brings the light. And the joy!

It seems as though Jankovic has put an unfortunate lampshade on this light to ring in the New Year, however. Recently, she’s set her Instagram account to private.

Elsewhere, Andy Murray brought his own kind of light and joy. This tweet about his Christmas jumper is probably the most quintessential Andy Murray thing he has ever done:

Sloane Stephens went to a pediatric center and handed out presents to the kids in the hospital:

Only after she and Laura Robson got all decked out for the season.

Juan Martin del Potro, who is due to make his comeback next month in Australia, posted this picture on his Facebook account. The tree actually manages to not make him look like the gentle giant that he is – which is a feat in itself.

ALSO: can we talk about the baubles? What’s going on there?

Victoria Azarenka uploaded a video to Instagram and another one with Holiday greetings in multiple languages on Facebook. Don’t worry, she didn’t try to do any singing this time around:

In a year where he didn’t approve of his peers or umpires, Fabio Fognini gave his Christmas tree a thumbs up. Here’s just hoping that Santa didn’t get an earful if he accidentally brought him the wrong present:

Andrea Petkovic decided to recycle her Christmas greetings. The German finished her off-season preparations in Offenbach and hopped on a plane down to Australia earlier today:

A wild Roger Federer appeared! The 17-time Grand Slam champion ventured out into the snowy Swiss countryside and decided to cover his entire face in wool. Because why not.

This post was accompanied with his typical use of emoticons, of course. #dorkerer

We all know that Aunt Clara gives weird gifts. (An aside: I really hope Alizé Cornet got that abacus for Christmas.)

Caroline Wozniacki spent Christmas with her family: riding jet-skis, relaxing…and watching Home Alone – because that is what you do during the holidays, right?

Christmas Day in our family is so much fun! #jetskis #food #family

David Goffin posed with a bottle of Children’s Champagne for Christmas. Sometimes, these jokes write themselves.

Meanwhile, Ana Ivanovic was already busy swinging her racket in Australia – with a certain Mr. Bastian Schweinsteiger sitting courtside, taking pictures of the World No. 5. #xoxogossipweatherman

And Sam Stosur ended up going to the beach and snorkeling for Christmas – because #Australia:

Did we miss anyone? Did any other players come up with some absolute gifts on social media over the holidays? Sound off in the comments!
